itsadoor safe, private, local AI in everything

Everything you can keep

Everything you keep in itsadoor is a document of one of 39 kinds. A kind is a family of files that belong together, such as documents, spreadsheets or photographs.

This page says what you can do with any of them, which piece of furniture holds each kind, what the app has for each kind today, and what the phone is planned to do. Where something is not built, it carries the mark “Not finished yet”.

The same words without the pictures: read this as text.

Safe, private, local AI in everything

Your own computer reads your life so the AI does not have to. It hands a small, private AI a short, true briefing, so the answer fits you and nothing leaves your house.

Not finished yet This is what the AI is being built to do. The app has no AI in it yet.

  1. It knows your situation, not just your question. It draws on your own notes, calendar, messages and records, all kept at home.
  2. The thinking happens before you ask. Overnight, your home computer goes through what changed and gets the answers ready. That is why a small AI can respond like a big one.
  3. The numbers are worked out, not guessed. Ordinary software does the arithmetic. The AI explains it in plain words.
  4. It notices what has changed. It speaks up only when something is off your normal, matters to a goal you hold, and you are in a place to use it.
  5. It fits the moment. At your desk it can give you a document. In the car it keeps it short and spoken.
  6. It says when it cannot tell. If it has lost sight of something, it tells you so and does not guess.
  7. You stay in charge. It suggests. Nothing is saved or sent unless you say so.
  8. It stays yours. Because it runs on your own devices, it can see everything that matters and still share nothing. Nobody trains on it and nobody sells it.

What you can do with any document

  1. Make it

Start a new document of one of the kinds below, from the piece of furniture it belongs on.

  2. Look at it

Open it in a view and see it as it is.

  3. Change it

Edit it. How much you can do depends on the kind, and each kind below says what the build has for it.

  4. Find it and arrange it

Search looks across names and the words inside documents. It works by words only. You choose which views each piece of furniture shows.

  5. Keep versions and go back

Every save keeps the earlier version, so nothing is written over. If two edits collide, both are kept. Moving something to the trash can be undone. Deleting for good cannot.

  6. Share it through the outgoing mailbox

The plan is that sharing from inside your house goes in the outgoing mailbox, and its flag is up while something is waiting to go. Nothing is sent from this website or from the app yet.

    Not finished yet

  7. Bring in and take out

Import files you already have and export what you made. The Backyard reads files that you give it.

  8. Ask at the call button

The call button is where you ask. The app has no AI yet, so where it has a button for asking, the button says so. A new home is closed to the outside: outside AI and connectors will become available only once you make the Garage, by your own choice.

    Not finished yet

What the local AI is for

All 39 kinds, by the furniture that holds them

The 39 kinds are held by five places: the desk, the fridge, the stoop and porch, the garage and the living room. Each kind appears once. A kind lives in one place and can be seen from many. A kind’s file types are examples from the app’s own list.

Each kind also says what the app has for it today. These are the three plain phrases:

Full editor
Written in the app for its own formats: making, editing, saving, importing and exporting.
Basic editor
A basic editor for the kind’s main type of file, within stated limits.
Opens in a program you install
The app keeps your files and connects to a separate program that you install yourself. None of those programs has been launched by the app’s code yet.

The square on each kind is its place on the phone, which is the website’s plan: work on it, catch and touch up, look and mark. Not finished yet

The app has been run on a few computers and not on a real phone. What exists today says what has been built and run.

On your phone

On a phone, the plan is a hub app and one work app for each piece of furniture. The hub keeps the key to your home. A work app has no home of its own: the hub lends it one document at a time, and the work app hands it back.

Only the hub and Desk exist, and only for the iPhone simulator, where they were built and run. Desk handles the Documents family today (Document, Markdown document, Plain text, Note, Journal page, Notebook). Nothing has run on a real phone.

The call button is on the phone’s thumb bar, and what you ask there will stay between your phone and your home.

The work apps

  • Hub Keeps the key to your home and lends documents out. It exists for the iPhone simulator.
  • Desk Exists for the iPhone simulator. It handles Documents today: Document, Markdown document, Plain text, Note, Journal page, Notebook. The plan is 18 kinds. Everything but Documents is not built. Not finished yet
  • Fridge The plan is 2 kinds: Spreadsheets, Forms. Not finished yet
  • Porch The plan is 9 kinds: Presentations, Images & painting, Vector drawing, Audio, Video, Animation, Music composition, Contacts, Messages & mail. Not finished yet
  • Garage The plan is 8 kinds: Data collections, Maps, Engineering drawings, Mechanical design, Building models, Circuits & boards, Medical imaging, Files & packets. Not finished yet

How a document goes to the phone and back

  1. The hub lends a document by starting the work app on that one document, with a pass. A pass is a loan of one document for a while.
  2. A document in the lockbox is lent only after the second lock. The second lock has to be passed again each time, and it lapses after 2 minutes.
  3. A pass ends when the phone has been idle for a while. For a journal, which stays on the phone only, that is 15 minutes.
  4. While the work app is in front, the hub is asleep and cannot extend the pass. The work app shows when the pass ends. In the last 3 minutes it offers to go back through the hub to keep it open.
  5. Handing a document over takes three switches between apps.
  6. Taking it back from the tray ends the pass now. The work app cannot open the document again, and anything typed there that was not handed back is dropped. It cannot unread what the work app already read.

These are the rules that were run on the iPhone simulator. They have not been run on a real phone.

Three levels of what a phone can do

How much of each kind can be done on a phone is the website’s plan, not something the app records. Every kind is in exactly one level. Not finished yet

Only Documents on Desk exists today. The rest of the plan is not built.

Three ways to set up

When you set up itsadoor on a phone, the app offers three ways to keep your home. These are its own titles and its own words. What was run is stated under each.

  1. A hub on this phone

    Least protected

Your home and its key live on this phone, with the lowest security and privacy settings. The simplest way to start. If the phone is lost, everything on it goes with it.

Your home stays on this phone. You can move to a home hub later without starting over.

What was run: This is the one that was run, end to end, on the iPhone simulator.

  2. A hub at home on a computer

    More protected

Your home lives on a computer at home. Your phone's apps reach the files there, with more privacy and security than keeping everything on the phone.

This continues on a computer: put itsadoor on the computer you want as the hub and pair this phone to it with a code. Pairing is not available in this build yet, so for now your home stays on this phone.

What was run: The encrypted copy of your home that stays on the phone is not built, and pairing to a computer with a code is not available in this build. Not finished yet

  3. A home hub and a portable hub

    Most protected

Your home lives on a computer at home and a portable hub goes with you. Nothing stays on your phone for any longer than it takes you to work on it.

This continues on a computer, with a portable hub. The portable hub and the passes that let a phone work on a file for a while are not available in this build yet. For now your home stays on this phone.

What was run: Only the protocol was run, on a Mac, against the real hub program on the same computer: pair, lend one document, read it, refuse a second document, queue an edit, sync, end the pass. The portable hub itself is not built. Not finished yet

None of the three has been run on a real phone. What each one needs, and where the downloads will be, is on the page Download.

Backups and pairing a second device are not built either. Not finished yet

Still to come

These are parts of the plan that have a place in the pictures on this website but are not built. Each is marked, and each says where you can see its place.

  • Phone work apps for the Fridge, the Stoop and porch, and the Garage One work app on the phone for each piece of furniture. Only Desk exists, and today it handles Documents on the iPhone simulator. Not finished yet On this page, under “On your phone”, and in the “On your phone” switch of each furniture window. Go there.
  • The backpack The one place for what is downloaded onto the device you carry. Each device has its own backpack. When the time runs out the item leaves the device and stays in the house. Not finished yet On the hook by the front door, with the tray, in every room.
  • Inviting people Inviting people into a shared property. It needs a connected hub. Not finished yet In the Your house window, in the column beside the picture.
  • Shared documents and Keep Each person drafts separately and changes arrive on Keep. When two changes collide, the AI suggests a combined version. Not finished yet On the office page, under “How the office will work”, and from the filing cabinet. Go there.
  • Guest visits and meeting spaces The backyard is where you will see the houses of people you are connected to and meet with them. Not finished yet In the backyard, through the gate on the stoop.
  • A place you host A separate room that a person or a business will create and run on their own server, for the people they invite. It will start closed. You will be able to sell goods there. The seller brings their own way to be paid; itsadoor never handles the payment. Not finished yet On the stoop, in the window you open by going out the front door: the Path leads on to it, and “Read about it” opens a page. Also in the office lobby, in the Shop counter’s window (Storefront and Commerce).
  • Places people host You will arrive at a place someone hosts through this website, the way you join a server in an online game: the website will show the door, and your invitation will let you in. Nothing is listed today. Not finished yet On the page Places people host. It opens from the stoop page about a place you host, and from here. Go there.
  • Downloads and guides The app for Mac, Windows and Linux, the iPhone and Android apps, the hub program, the guide to building your own hub, the hub images, and the community hub with its guide. Today there is nothing to download. Not finished yet On the page Download, as empty slots. Go there.
  • Keys, founders and the club The free house, the personal and property keys, the hosted house, the founders packages, the boxes, the club and chipping in. Nothing can be bought yet. Not finished yet On the page Beta, under the free sign-up. Go there.
  • The 3D house The same home as a house you walk through in three dimensions. Not finished yet In the “See it grow” panel of every room.
  • Backups, and pairing a second device The app makes and restores no backups yet, and cannot finish pairing a second device. Not finished yet On this page, under “Three ways to set up”. Go there.
  • AI in the app The app has no AI yet. Where a button for it exists, it says so. The AI you can ask on this website is the guide, which runs on a small computer. Not finished yet In the call window: at the top, what the AI will do in the place you pressed it, written in content/call.ts; below it, the guide.

What has been built is on What exists today.
